On the 16th of May 2024, The Great achievers Initiative for Youth and Community Development (GAIYD) celebrated the 2024 International Boy Child Day with their maiden essay competition with was held at Merit House, Maitama Abuja, with over 30 schools competing for scholarship worth Three Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N350,000).
The event was chaired by Mainasara Umar, an international media analyst spoke about the quality of any society and family is reflective on the mentality of boy children the family incubates. Chidi Ndukwe, the deputy commander of narcotics at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), stated that according to the National Drug Law Use Survey conducted in Nigeria in 2018, one in seven persons aged 15-64 had used a drug (other than tobacco and alcohol) in the past year.
Justin Nwankwo who represented the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio stated that Nigeria has all it takes to train up a child irrespective of class or gender but more often than that, the boy child is left to his fate.
The president and founder of GAIYD Mr. Hillary Akpua unveiled the maiden essay competition on the topic: “How the boy child can contribute to a better society”.
The eventual winner, Abugu Anslem from GSS Gwagwalada went home with a scholarship worth N150,000, followed by Jimoh Nicholas from GSS Jabi and Levi Worthy from GDSS Gwagwalada winning scholarship of N100,000 and N50,000 respectively.
