The Great Achievers Initiative for Youth and Community Development (GAIYD) has been recognised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its commitment to advocacy and the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria.
The recognition took place on Thursday, August 13, 2026, during the 12th Chairman/CEO’s Commendations and Awards Ceremony at the NDLEA National Headquarters in Abuja.
GAIYD was among 19 NGOs and media organisations recognised for their commitment to the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy in Nigeria.
More Than an Award
For GAIYD, this recognition is a meaningful reminder of the importance of the work being done within communities.
The fight against drug abuse cannot be won through enforcement alone. It requires education, prevention, awareness, mentorship and the collective effort of families, schools, communities, government agencies, civil society organisations and the media.
Young people, in particular, need access to the right information and positive support systems that can help them make informed decisions and build healthier futures.
This is why youth advocacy remains an important part of GAIYD’s work.
A Shared Responsibility
Speaking at the ceremony, the NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), described the fight against drug abuse as a generational responsibility.
The message is one that strongly resonates with GAIYD’s mission.
Preventing substance abuse is not only about responding when a problem has already occurred. It is also about reaching young people early, creating awareness, encouraging healthy choices and building communities where young people have the support and opportunities they need to thrive.

We are grateful to the NDLEA for recognising the efforts of organisations contributing to this important national cause.
For GAIYD, the recognition is both an honour and a responsibility.
It encourages us to continue creating meaningful conversations around issues affecting young people, strengthening our advocacy efforts and working towards communities where young people can grow, learn and achieve their potential.
We celebrate the recognition, but we know the work continues.
The goal remains simple: to educate, empower and support young people while building stronger and healthier communities.
