The International Day of the Boychild 2026 was a remarkable celebration of purpose, potential, and positive values as over 150 students, 30 distinguished guests, educators, community leaders, and stakeholders gathered at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on May 16, 2026.
Organized by GAIYD under the theme, “Boys for Integrity,” the event was designed to inspire young boys to embrace integrity, discipline, leadership, and responsibility as they prepare to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Far more than a one-day event, the celebration was the culmination of weeks of activities that brought together students from nine schools through sports, mentorship, advocacy, and meaningful conversations about character development.
A Journey That Began on the Football Pitch
In the weeks leading up to the main celebration, GAIYD organized the GAIYD Sports Competition, a football tournament aimed at using sports as a tool for mentorship and youth engagement.
Beginning on April 23, 2026, the competition featured eight participating schools: Nyanya Gbagyi, Gods Grace International Academy, Winning Ways Academy, Bri Mike Montessori Academy, Mon Dieu Montessori Academy, GSS Bakin Ado, GSS Karu East, and Bill Clinton College.

Hosted at Nyanya Gbagyi during the preliminary stages, the tournament quickly became one of the highlights of the International Day of the Boychild activities.
With each school represented by 15 players, the competition showcased exceptional talent, teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Throughout the group stages and knockout rounds, students demonstrated not only footballing ability but also sportsmanship and respect for their opponents.
As the tournament progressed, two outstanding teams emerged as finalists: Winning Ways Academy and GSS Bakin Ado.
Notably, both teams remained unbeaten throughout the competition, a testament to the quality and competitiveness of the tournament.
A Dramatic Championship Match
The grand finale took place on May 16 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where spectators witnessed an exciting and fiercely contested encounter between Winning Ways Academy and GSS Bakin Ado.
Both teams displayed exceptional organization, determination, and tactical discipline throughout the match. Neither side was willing to surrender an advantage, resulting in a tense battle that kept spectators engaged until the final whistle.
Unable to separate the teams during regular play, the championship was decided through a penalty shootout.

In a dramatic conclusion, GSS Bakin Ado missed a crucial penalty, allowing Winning Ways Academy to claim victory and be crowned champions of the GAIYD Sports Competition 2026.
Winning Ways Academy lifted the championship trophy and received a cash prize of ₦100,000.

A Call to Raise Boys of Integrity
One of the most anticipated moments of the programme was the address delivered by the President of GAIYD, Dr. Hillary Akpua.
Reflecting on the organization’s journey, Dr. Akpua explained that GAIYD was founded out of concern that the boy child was often overlooked in conversations surrounding child development.

“It’s a journey that we started with friends and today we are almost five years old,” he said.
According to him, the organization has consistently advocated for greater attention to the emotional, moral, and social development of boys.
He also explained why football was selected as a central feature of the 2026 celebration.
“Football brings nations together, football brings communities together, football brings families together,” he noted.
For Dr. Akpua, sports provide a unique opportunity to teach values such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, resilience, and integrity.
He emphasized that the primary objective of the event was to encourage boys to grow into responsible men guided by strong moral values.
Giving the Boy Child a Voice
The Royal Father of the Day and Grand Patron of GAIYD, Alhaji Aminu Yakubu, Wambai Wakili of Zazzau, also addressed participants.

In his remarks, he stressed the importance of ensuring that the voices of boys are heard and that they receive the support and guidance necessary to navigate life’s challenges.
He called for greater attention to the development of boys and encouraged stakeholders to continue investing in programmes that empower and mentor young people.
EFCC Promotes Integrity as a Way of Life
The event also featured a goodwill message from the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, represented by Assistant Commander of the EFCC and Head of the Enlightenment and Reorientation Unit, Aisha Mohammed.

Speaking on the theme “Boys for Integrity,” she emphasized the importance of raising boys who view integrity as a defining part of their identity.
“If we want a Nigeria free of corruption, we must raise a generation of boys who see integrity not as a burden, but an identity,” she said.
She further noted that integrity is learned through consistent teaching, positive examples, and practice.
Highlighting the EFCC’s preventive approach to fighting corruption, she explained that initiatives such as Integrity Clubs in primary and secondary schools and Zero Tolerance Clubs in tertiary institutions were established to encourage ethical behaviour among young Nigerians.
According to her, lasting change will come not only through enforcement but through raising young people who choose honesty, accountability, and responsibility.
Recognizing Excellence
In addition to team prizes, special awards were presented to outstanding participants who distinguished themselves throughout the competition.
Awards were presented for:
- Highest Goal Scorer
- Player of the Tournament
- Special Recognition Awards for exceptional performance and contribution

The award presentations celebrated excellence while encouraging participants to continue striving for success both on and off the field.
A Memorable Conclusion
As the day’s activities drew to a close, participants reflected on the lessons and experiences gained throughout the celebration.
Closing remarks were delivered, emphasizing the importance of continuing to invest in the development of boys through mentorship, education, and positive community engagement.
The event concluded with networking sessions, group photographs, and joyful celebrations by Winning Ways Academy as they marked their historic triumph.
Yet beyond the trophies, medals, and prizes, the true success of the International Day of the Boychild 2026 lay in its message.
It reminded everyone present that integrity, discipline, leadership, and responsibility are qualities that must be intentionally nurtured.

From the opening matches in April to the final celebrations in May, the programme demonstrated the power of sports, mentorship, and advocacy in shaping the next generation.
The International Day of the Boychild 2026 was not merely a celebration—it was a call to action. A call to continue investing in boys, amplifying their voices, and equipping them with the values they need to build stronger communities and a better future.

Under the theme “Boys for Integrity,” GAIYD once again affirmed a simple but powerful truth: when boys are guided with purpose and integrity, society as a whole benefits.
